Internet and Cultural Development: A Survey on Iranʹs Cultural Information on Web. (19 PP.)

This paper intends to present an overall view on contribution of Iran in dissemination of cultural information about itself on the web. Using Northern Light search engine, a survey has been done to examine the number of the sources retrieved by the keywords of "culture" and "Iran" in the title of the web sites. 105 sites were selected and analyzed in terms of their languages and the place of domains in various countries. Moreover, the number of the sites retrieved by the keywords of "culture" and the names of 35 countries in the Asia and Oceania regions in the title of the web sites was examined. A ranking list has been provided to compare countries in the region accordingly. The findings of the research showed that Iran had a very insignificant role in dissemination of cultural information about itself on the web. The investigation also indicated that almost the lowest sources retrieved in this way belong to Arab countries and newly independent states of the former Soviet Union. The paper also provides an overview on some of the main opportunities, challenges, threats and risks that developing countries are facing in using Internet for cultural development.
