Bradfordʹs law and fuzzy sets: statistical implications for library analyses

Describes the theoretical basis and practical aspects of the Bradfordʹs law. The distinction between classical sets and fuzzy sets and the idea of Karl Pearson about "the Grammar of science" are explained. Also the methods for handling outliers are described from Barnett and Lewis perspective. Reports a survey carried out at Louisiana State University about the selection of chemistry journals by faculty members and their comparison to ISI journal classification. Concludes that the Bradfordʹs sets, too, are fuzzy. Suggests a couple of methods for handling outliers. Also concludes that the probability theory and fuzzy sets are not contradictory but they complement statistical analyses.
