Description Level of Networked Resources:An Introduction to Dublin Core Metadata Qualifiers

Development and deployment of metadata formats for resource description and discovery, particularly on the web, is of the most important activities of the communities involved in electronic resource organization. Among the existing different metadata formats that provide the various levels of description, Dublin Core Metadata Initiative has found a especial importance for describing electronic resources in general and for web resources in particular. Its simplicity of elements provides for creating metadata records with the minimum level of description. Two broad classes of qualifiers including Element Refinement Qualifiers and Element Encoding Schemas provide for refining the semantic of metadata and creating metadata records with richer description. This paper is an introduction to the Dublin Core Qualifiers. Also, the linguistic approach to Dublin Core statements with and without qualifiers is a matter considered.
