Effects of the Internet on Family Values Among High School Students in the City of Mashad

The internet is a phenomenon affecting many aspects of the social life. This research attempts to examine the degree and kind through which the internet is put into use. It also aims determine how the internet affects family values. In so doing various pertinent theories of the mass communication, group dynamics and Habermasʹ communicative action have been utilized. This is a survey research for which the questionnaire was used among high school students in public schools. The study was conducted at district # 3 in the city of Mashad within education year of 82-83 (Iranian calendar). A cluster sampling with the size of 403 persons was used. The results indicated that the internet was being used by 45% of students. The overall average for the use of the internet was 498 minutes per week and chatting wass determined to he the most common utility used with an average of 127 minutes per week. In multi-variable regression analysis, upon introducting the entirety of variables, the effect of the internet on family values was found to have been 10%. Also upon entering all variables into multi-variable regression analysis, the effect of access to the internet on family values did not appear to be significant.
