A Profile of Migration in Khuzestan Province in 86-96 and the Issue of Return Migration

During the decade of 1986-1996, Khuzestan province, compared to other provinces of the country has had a considerable place in terms of population relation. The dominant pattern of migration in third world countries in that of the villagers to cities, that takes place more according to the model of "step migration", firstly begun from the rural areas to the closest town. The migrant goes into the larger cities where better job opportunity and probably more income are accessible after adapting himself to work and living conditions in the city three or four years past. In Khuzestan during 10 years of study, we witnessed another pattern of migration, though temporarily, it has influenced process of development there. This pattern is "return migration" of the people who relocated to other cities from wartorn areas due to the Iran-Iraq war in the early 80s. They returned home in the late 1980s. This paper, while favoring the classical model of stopmigration, mainly aims to further attend to the model of return migration, which is not much prevailed in the third world countries, but has been effective on socio-economic life of present Khuzestan.
