The study of sustainability in agriculture, given various on-going discussions, and assuming that the present trends would continue, is in fact the study of the future situation of agriculture. The present study describes its socioeconomic, environmental and political goals theoretically, and then draws its conceptual model of agriculture according to its internal elements consisting of four main surrounding environments: social, economic, natural, and political. It then proceeds to draw the interrelationships among the main environments. Thus, this paper studies the agricultural sustainability from a social point of view (population, training, and poverty); an economic view (growth, investment, and employment), a natural view (land, water, and biodiversity), and the political view (law, planning, and organization). Then sustainability is looked upon from the above dimensions, all of which help to define its concept and to draw an analysis. Finally, the findings show that agriculture is not unsustainable from all dimensions which were investigated here. It is not sustainable either. That is to say, the continuation of the present trends and conditions will not improve the agricultural situation fundamentally unless some reforms and changes are introduced into the overall system.
