Clinical,Immunological and Neuroimaging in HTLV1 Associated Myelopathy Patients

HTLVI associated Myelopathy/Tropical spastic Paraparesis (HAM/TSP) is Characterized by chronic spastic tetraparesis, hyperreflexia, Babinski sign, mild sensory loss, painful paresthesisa and bladder dysfunction. Here, we report the results of clinical and paraclinical evaluation of 100 patients with HAM/TSP conducted in Mashhad Ghaern Hospital between 1999 - 2001. The results of this study are as follow: The incidence ofHTLVI associated Myelopathy/Tropical spastic Paraparesis was 24/4 percent (one Hundred from 410-tetraparetic patient). The age range was 8 to 74 years and peak of age was 40 years. Disease was more prevalent in female than male. CSF findings consisted with increased protein and IgG but normal cytology and suger. Cerebrospinal anti HTLV1 antibody detected in 92 patient by Elisa and western blot assays. Eight patients who were not searching with poly merase chain reaction (PCR) were positive. Magnetic Resonance Imaging performed in 100 patient. Only three patients had periventricular plaques. The latter was different from multiple sclerosis plaques.
