Comparison of the prevalence of oral mucosa pigmentation in smokers and nonsmokers that lead recourse] to oral medicine department of Yazd Dentistry Faculty in 2000(Pesearch )

The purpose of the this study was comparision of oral mucosal pigmentation between smokers (S) and nonsmokers (NS). For this purpose one cross - sectional descriptive study preformed on 299 patients that had recoursed to oral medicine department of Yazd dentistry faculty (from Jun 2000 to Dec 2000). In this population 59 was mokers and reminder was Ns. This sample included 152 M and 147 F(13-70 years old). The relationship between of oral mucosal pigmentation and smoking (number of cigarret per day, duration and demographic data of patients and location of pigmentation has been assessed. Prevalence of oral pigmentation was 50.2% (M=59.2%, F=40.8% S=86.4%, Ns= 14.2%) The most common site of pigmantation in both groups was anterolabial gingiva (S=94.1%, NS=74.7%) This study confirmed a significant relationship between oral pigmentation and smoking.
