ACTIVITY OF THE BRAIN / BEHAVIORAL SYSTEMS AND INTROVERSION / EXTRAVERSION IN WOMEN WITH RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

The relationship between specific personality caracteristics and physical illness, is one of the subjects that is being investigated in health psychology. This research investigates two biologically based personality caracteristics, Activity of brain / behavioral systems and introversion / extraversion, in women with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Thirty women with RA and 30 healthy women within the same age range were selected. Both groups completed the Gray-Wilson and the Eysenck personality Questionaires. Means of groups were compared with t-tests. Results provide support for two hypotheses that women with RA obtained higher ratings than healthy women regarding activity of the Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS), and lower ratings with respect to activity of the Behavioral Activating System (BAS). Activity of the BIS, howevere, was not found to be higher than the activity of the BAS in RA women. Results also indicate that women with RA obtained higher Introversion scores.
