A STUDY OF PREVALENCE OF DEPRESSION AND EFFECTIVENESS OF THE COGNITIVE-BEHAVIOR THERAPY IN DEPRESSED STUDENT

This study aims at identifying the depressd cases among the female Shahed students (those students whos parents were martyred), and female students of the general population (F.S.G.P.) at Shahed highschools. It also attempts to indicate the efectiveness of the Cognitive Behavior Therapy in reduction of depression in depressed cases. The Beck Depression Inventory was administered on 70 female Shahed students and 127 F.S.G.P.s in a group session. The result showed that severe and profound depression was found among 20% of Shahed students, compare to only 5% of the F.S.G.P.s. Depressed students, then, have been divided into two experimental and control groups. The experimental group recieved CBT. There was a significant diference between depression mean scores of the two groups in the post-test, revealing that the Cognitive Behavior Therapy has significantly reduced the level of depression in the experimental group.
