A PRELIMINARY STUDY ON THE EFFECTS OF MARRIAGE PREPARATION PROGRAM ON CHANGING THE UNIVERSITY STUDENTSʹ RELATIONSHIP BELIEFS

This study aims to evaluate the efects of educating cognitive skills of marital life in changing the relationship beliefs of the university students. From a pool of about 300 couples who were engaged and proposed to participate at the mass marriage celebrations in February 2002, 52 students (16 male and 36 famale) participated in the Marriage Preparation Workshop at the Family Research Institute. All participants filled out the Relationship Beliefs Inventory twice: Before and after the workshop, as the pre and post-tests. Results revealed that irrational relationship beliefs were significantly reduced after participation at the Marriage Preparation Workshop. "Disagreement is Destructive", "Mindreading is Expected", and "Partners Cannot Change" subscales had significantly changed in the post-test. Discussion is focuses on the importance of organizing marriage preparation programs on the mental and family health.
