A Case of a Rabies Disease Patient

Rabies disease is a kind of encephalitis that is produced by the rabies virus. The virus often enters the human body through dog bites. This disease is endemic in the Kurdistan region but in the last few years no documented case of rabies has been reported. This report was written to increase awareness of the appropriate handling of bite cases. The case was a 14 year old boy with unusual symptoms including fever, sore throat and symptoms similar to epiglotitis. After routine laboratory tests were carried out, no specific symptoms were apparent except leukocytosis. Because of his unusual symptoms he was diagnosed with epiglotitis and treated accordingly. Other cases with the following symptoms: pain and paresthesis in limbs (1 case), dysphagia (2 cases), chest pain (3 cases), limb paresthesis (4 cases), psychologic signs (5 cases), and hemoptysis (3 cases) have been reported. However, a case being mistaken for epiglotitis has never been reported. The patient was treated with anti rabies immune globulin and antibiotics but unfortunately he died. Results: Rabies disease might have many unusual symptoms and the best way of preventing and controlling this disease is through the injection of anti rabies immune globuloin and vaccines. All cases of bites should be investigated and appropriate prophylaxis should be done.
