Determination of the location of placenta in pregnant women in the third trimester of pregnancy

Background and Aim: Evaluation of placenta is one of the most important parts of sonographic examination of pregnant uterus. Fetus development is dependent on the placenta. Determination of the location of placenta is of great clinical importance, since most complications of the second and third trimesters of pregnancy is due to placental abnormalities. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive study the statistical population included all pregnant women who had referred to Sanandaj Besat hospital for routine sonographic examination, from March to September 2003. All subjects were evaluated by sonologist to determine the location of placenta in uterus. Other demographic data such as age and the number of pregnancies were recorded in questionnaires and analyzed by SPSS software. Results: 252 pregnant women underwent sonography and the location ofplacenta in their uteri was determined. In our study 44.3 percent of the subjects had anterofundal placenta. The second most common location of placenta in uterus was posterofundal. We did not detect placenta previa in our subjects. Conclusion: According to the result of this study, the location of placenta in our subjects was different from that of the western countries and the prevalence of placenta previa was lower.
