The effects of different treatments on dormancy and germination of redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.) Secds

Redroot pigweed is usually known as a weed. The seed of redroot pigweed. containing primary dormancy which produces some problems in weed control and planting the pasture species. This project is conducted to find an effective method for breaking seed dormancy and promoting redroot pigweed germination. In this study, the effects of different treatments such as sulfuric acid (70%), gibberellic acid, ethanol, acetone, hydrogen peroxide, sodium azide, ethylene and dry storing on germination of redroot pigweed seeds, were evaluated. Most of the treatments, such as wetting in 10-2 M and 10-3 M solutions of sodium azide, treating with different concentration of hydrogen peroxide, ethanol, acetone, 70% sulfuric acid and ethylene were very effective.
