Sediment Transport at Intakes

One of the most important problems in diverting water from alluvial rivers is control of sediment entering the canals and water conveyance systems. The presence of sediment in water creates complicated problems in canals and intakes as well as in the operation of turbines and pumps through which the sediment-laden water flows. The aim of this research is to study the effect of most effective parameters in sediment transport to the lateral intakes in a river bend. So the effect of some of the parameters such as discharge diversion percentage, location of intakes were studied in a experimental model. Rectangular intake canals with the constant length of 200, height of 60 centimeter and widths of 10, 20, 30 centimeter were constructed in different points of a 90° river bend with 100 centimeter width. In each series of experiments, an intake with constant width installed at a diversion angle (a) in a location (B) on the model. Every test were comsisted of four different discharge and at every discharge three different discharge percentage were tested. In all the experiments, A constant weight of sediment with the constant velocity injected in the model. The sediment transported at the intake and downstream of the model were collected, dried and weighted. Finely the best location and diversion discharge percentage in the experiments were recommended.
