Assessment of Benefits of a Biological Innovation in Tomato Industry in Khorasan Province

Application of biological innovation such as hybrid varieties in relation to a given crop, can improve welfare in a society. Anyway, the consumers never lose from applied technology. Only in the case of perfectly elastic demand curve, their benefit would be zero . But the benefit or loss of producers depends on the elasticity of demand and the type of shift in supply curve. Where, the demand is inelastic and the supply shift is pivotal, producers will lose. Application of hybrid varieties of tomato in Khorasan with and without international trade and with various rate of adoption can affect the benefits of producers. The results of this study indicate that the most benefit from application of hybrid varieties would be abtaineable under international trade as well as perfect adoption. The total benefit which producers can gain in the province will be about 74039 million rials.
