A Comparison Of Sunflower, Corn And Sugarbeet Characteristics Under Different Irrigation Systems Using Wastewater

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of irrigation water (well water and wastewater) treatment as well as irrigation methods, namely surface and sprinkler irrigation on yield in sugarbeet, corn and sunflower. Two experimental plots, one for surface irrigation and the other for sprinkler irrigation, each planted sunflower, corn and sugarbeet with nine replications were employed in the study. Irrigation with wastewater as compared with irrigation with well water resulted in higher yield, reduction in percentage of sugar content and increase in sugar gross yield for sugarbeet crop in which the differences were statistically significant. Irrigation with wastewater as compared to irrigation with well water did not have any significant effect on either sunflower or corn. Irrigation system treatment did not have any significat effect on yield in sugarbeet, sunflower or corn. The effects of irrigation water and irrigation system treatments on absorbtion of crop minerals including nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, sodium, iron, copper, zinc, nickle and cadmium exhibited no significant differences. Wastewater can therefore be used as a source of exhibited irrigation water. It reduces the need for commercial fertilizer because it contains minerals such as nitrogen, phosphorus as well as macro and micro elements required by crops. The results also indicated that irrigation with wastewater does not have any injurious side effect on crops under study.
