A Study of Combining Ability and Gene Effect in Rice Cultivars through Line/ Tester Analysis

The rational selection and corresponding suitable results in any breeding program depend on an understanding of combining ability gene effects. Six lines (maternal) and three testers (paternal) were used in a randomized complete block design, line / tester method. Nine parents and 18 Pis were evaluated for several agronomically important traits such as plant height, length and width of flag leaf, number of sterile and full grains /panicle, length and width of grain, number of tillers, panicle length, 1000 grain weight, maturity date as well as yield. The results indicated significant differences at %1 and %5 level for all characters except for number of tillers in all Feʹs. The same results were obtained for all character except grain length and yield for all parental lines. The variance of testers indicated significant differences for plant height, flag leaf length, panicle length, full grain, 1000 grain weight and yield but showed non significance for other traits. The variance of line / tester also showed significant differences for yield, plant height, sterile grain, flag leaf width, panicle length, full grain but non significance for the rest of traits. Line I and tester 3 showed the best general combining ability for panicle length while line 4 for full grain. Meanwhile hybrid 8 indicated the best specific combining ability (SCA) for yield while hybrids 12 and 15 for full grain and panicle length respectively.
