A Project for the Compilation of Legal Terms and Expressions

This project, first proposed by the current head of the Academy of Persian Language and Literature in 2001, aims at refining the specialized language used by Iranian legislators and the judiciary through a systematic examination of the body of legal texts produced during the past century, from the Constitutional Revolution down to the present day. As a result of this scrutiny, the most valid legal terms which have been in use during this 100-year period will come to light and a major dictionary of legal terminology will be compiled. The working method outlined in the project consists of establishing a small office equipped with all the latest tools of information technology, and then getting a number of researchers to go over a wide of variety of official documents to mark the legal terms which occur in them. These terms and the instances of their use will then be transferred to a computer to create a database of legal terminology. The terms found in the database will be subsequently tabulated and sorted, and at the final stage the most important of these will be defined on the basis of their usage and original sense. One of the key questions that the project will address is to find out if the prevalent legal terms used in Persian meet the needs of the people using them.
