Some Words and Phrases of Mahmud Pasikani in Ketab-e Mizan

Mahmud Pasikani (d 831 A.H./1427-28 C.E.) is one of the founders of the Noqtaviyyah movement, whose unorthodox religious beliefs were embraced mainly by a growing number of dervishes and Sufis in the early Safavid period, and it was finally suppressed by Shah `Abbas in 1002/1593-94. Of Mahmud Pasikaniʹs various writings, only four items have survived: two treatises which were published by Dr. Sadeq Kia (Pasikanian, Tehran, 1331 A.H.S.), and two books, respectively entitled Mafatih al-Goyub and Mizan , both of which remain unpublished. The author, who is a well-known scholar, and has already published several articles on the contents of these two hooks and the views expressed in them, devotes the present paper to a listing of a number of words and phrases from the text of Mizan (written in 821/1418) which he finds significant from a linguistic point of view. These include many obsolete or obsolescent usages which will be of interest to lexicographers. The author has used the MS of Mizan in the Malek Library (No. 6226) for his research; another manuscript of this book is in the library attached to the Shrine of Hazrat `Ali in Najaf, Iraq, but the author has had no access to it.
