The history of man is nothing but a long search for identity the oldest sign of which has been the ʹnameʹ which designates ʹmeʹ. The ʹIʹ within does not have one face; it is a masquerade of faces, which we know as oneʹs (social) personae. Modem writers have tried to show this identity, which is contingent on a variety of interactions, as a combination of roles, that is, as bricoulage. This essay elaborates on this search for identity in some dramatic texts and examines the devices employed by their authors.
