Language and the Representation of Reality

This paper aims to investigate how language forges and structures the conceptual apparatus of human beings to perceive the world. By presenting a critical review of major linguistic and philosophical reflections on language and reality, the paper brings to light certain aspects of language involved in constructing reality in a specific ways. On the basis of three theoretical frameworks in linguistics, namely anthropological linguistics by Whorf, cognitive linguistics by Lakoff, and social semiotics by Halliday, the current paper analyzes a number of examples from Persian language to demonstrate that the perception and conceptualization of reality is, to a great extent, bound up with language use. Therefore, it can be argued that language does not map onto external reality, but it represents our conceptualization of and interaction with the world.
