THE STATUS OF RELIGIOUS MUSIC IN ANCIENT IRAN

Ancient Iranian music dates back to a long time ago. The study of documents suggests a high position for music in ancient Iran. From among different kinds of music, the religious one enjoys especial status. This article attempts to study and analyze the religious aspect of music in ancient Iran as well as its position. To this end, the related literature and remains obtained through archaeological explorations have been scrutinized. The evidence indicates that music has played a great functional role in rendering religious ceremonies in Iran. In fact, the religious ceremonies were expressed through music and this was sometimes the only language to worship. Music and religious beliefs have always had close relationships in Iran, correlative with each other and complimenting one another. Music has helped express the presence of man in perceiving the world. It has also given a sense to this perception. This kind of music has strong bases placed in peopleʹs beliefs, having its roots deep in their souls. This kind of music has managed to survive through different ages, consolidating the foundations of Iranian music. Thus, the wealth and elevation of Iranian music deserves further study and reflection.
