THE IMPACT OF UKIYO-E ON EUROPEAN PAINTING

T he second half of the nineteenth century brought fundamental changes in the social, economic, scientific and political life of Europe. Cultural growth of European and becoming more familiar with Eastern civilizations made them to be enamoured to Far Eastern art. Japanism, a phenomena that firmly rooted in the life of European, appearance of Japan at the international expositions in Europe, Invention of camera, appearing new scientific theories in colour and formation the idea of Impressionism in the thought of young French artists made them to have tendency for Ukiyo-e prints and works of great masters such as: Utamaro, Hiroshige and Hokusai. The impact of Ukiyo-e on these artists paved the way for fundamental changes in the art the of Europe. European artists ignored the conventional art of the West and had a tendency towards the rules of Eastern art, such as: flat and brilliant coulours, different viewpoints, interpretation of space and genre picture. This paper discuss the historical background of entering Ukiyo-e art to Europe and studies of the first and second generations of Impressionists.
