ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS FIN THE DESIG AND REHABILITATION OF URBAN STREETS

Despite the talks and efforts in the field of sustainable and ecological design in professional assemblies, the big cities in our country are faced with a degradation in environmental qualities which is the result of issues such as the authorities, planners and designers not believing in the critical situation of the cities, and the lack of a comprehensive environmental plan and strategy. Added to these should be the absence of clear concepts and principles about sustainable solutions. Thus, the aim of this article is to focus on those environmental considerations that through presenting principles for designing urban streets, help achieve part of urban "sustainability" and "livability". Promoting the quality of urban streets and their rehabilitation needs a holistic approach towards planning, management and design. The role of design is important because it can be directive for creating a balanced and efficient life in the sense of resources, and livable context in the sense of the spirit of space. So three basic principles: ordering the space in an ecological framework, considering the limitations of energy consumption and giving priorities to renovation and restoration instead of widening and constructing new streets can help to improve their physical quality and achieve sustainable and livable streets. After a general investigation of issues and problems of the urban streets in Tehran, there will be some recommendations according to the principles cited.
