AGENDA FOR UNDERSTANDING AND ANALYSING THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

In recent years, sustainability has been the focal point of many discussions both within the specialized and the general populace, and a large part of design publications has been devoted to this subject. As a result, sustainablity has been discussed from a variety of different perspectives of planning and designing the environmental and many policies have been proposed. Yet, despite comprehensive and detailed decision-making process models, it seems their practical procedure is not quite clear. The following article discusses foundations of developing and improving the process of planning and designing the environment. In relation to manage the analyzing stage of the process, the author aims to propose a procedural way to improve both the teaching and the practice of planning and designing the environmental. This way designers would be able to adapt their analytical strategies according to their individual and specific environments without having resorting to pre-existing general models cf analysis. The emphesis is in the fusion of the 1) research and (2) design approaches in the process of planning and designing the environment, where (1) the analysis approach of the process with problem-solving, decision-making and management, are seen as fundamentally different to (2) the practical application of such theories involving planning and design.
