A STUDY OF THE CHERRY ORCHARD AND ITS CHARACTERS

The present paper will first point out the dif-ferences between the characteristics of the Theater of Ostrovskyʹ which puts focus on the text and those of the modern theatre which is based on the directorʹs understanding of the inner concepts and his working with the actors and the roles they play. Then, the features of Chekhovʹs plays, and his last play the Cherry Orchard, and its characters will be elaborated. Chekhov portrays the charactersʹ life and personalities using an orchard and attributes both positive and negative aspects to his characters. While depicting the characters in the Cherry Orchard and portraying three generations (past, present and future) along each other and comparing them with one another, the paper concludes that Chekhov discusses these three generations intentionally in order to show to the reader that for saving the orchard (Russia) three elements, i.e., work, hope and liberty, in the three generations play a key role.
