AN IMAGINATIVE REVITALIZATION OF THE CITY OF NEISHABOUR GHAZANKHANI: USING HISTORIC TEXTS

I n this "Imaginative Revitalization" case study, an attempt has been made to provide an understanding about the social/physical image of the old city of Neishabour. Remains of the old city, as well as the conducted research through some historic/literature texts of that period, starting from the rise of Islam - in the 6th century A.D.- to the period of relocating the city during the reign of Shahroukh Teymouri, have provided some invaluable information for this study. In order to develop the final image of the old city, a primary scaled map was developed and compared to the results of the previous documents. Since there was a need to conduct some field studies, not to mention the need for a comprehensive archaeological search, the definite perimeters of the old city was not drawn in the final map. Some features of the newly developed map of the old city include: physical details of the communities, the boundaries of the fortress gates, and some information about the outside of the old city limit (Shar-estun). The outcome of this research could not only help to define the boundaries of the old city, it could also help to preserve the cultural/physical values of that region. Eventually, the results of this study could be used as a basis for further archaeological research which could develop a more definite map of the old city. Nevertheless, the present city of Neishabour could benefit from the cultural/tourism attraction of the old city.
