One of the managementS of chronic renal failure(CRF) is hemodialysis, where in there is a need for extracorporeal blood circulation with the risk of clot formation. This study was designed to compare the efficacy of the two methods of priming a hemodialysis set in prevention of clot formation. In this semi- experimental study performed in two stages , initially , the hemodialysis set was primed with normal saline and then with heparinized normal saline. The rate of clot formation in the dialyser was assessed using a questionnaire and a check list. The data analysis indicated that there was no significant difference in the rate of clot formation between the two methods ( p =- 0.75) We , therefore, conclude that since priming by normal saline solution is not only cheaper with low risks of infection but also requires less nursing time , it is the better procedure for priming of a hemodialysis set .
