Comparison of the Amount of Fluoride Ion in Domestic Iranian Toothpastes with Few Foreign Commercial Brands and International Standards

Background & Aim: The toothpastes with fluoride have an important role in decreasing the prevalence of dental caries. The accepted range by FDA as standard is 850-1500 PPM. There has not been any published research on measuring the amount of fluoride in domestic toothpaste on the last twenty years. Therefore it seems necessary to measure the amount of fluoride in these products and compare them with the accepted range by FDA and some of the foreign commercial brands. Method & Material: The study conducted experimentally using observation as its technique. Fifteen Iranian toothpastes and four foreign commercial toothpastes selected and analyzed for the amount of fluoride. Potentiometric method of analysis with fluoride selective electrode was used. Results: Distribution of fluoride ion in seven out of fifteen tested domestic toothpaste and in two out of four kind of tested foreign-made toothpaste was unique. Also results showed that the amount of fluoride ion in only one out of fifteen tested domestic toothpaste and two out of four kind of tested foreign-made toothpastes were within the international standards range. Conclusion: Since the amount of fluoride ion in nearly all of the tested domestic toothpaste are lower than the international standards range. Also distribution of fluoride ion in most of tested domestic toothpaste was not unique. Therefore careful evaluation of these products highly recommended.
