Mica is a mineral belonging to alum-silica fedspars or aluminosilicate family of that exists in nature in a size range from 50 mesh to 2 inches. This mineral has a pseudo hexagonal and monoclinic crystaline structure with a perfect basic clevage. Due to extensive applications of mica in small sizes, it was desirable to develop a new and economical size reduction process for this strategic mineral. Common methods of size reduction include ballmills, rodmills, hammermills and cutter hammermills with difference mechanisms of stroke, friction and cutting, But due to crystaline structure of mica the size reduction yield of these processes are very low. Thus, in this paper the size reduction by chemical methods has been considered and compared with mechanical methods in terms of its techno-economical feasibility. Trough the use of thermal shock in an alkaline media the crystaline structure of mica is weakened and after several washing stages, followed by acidification and mixing, mica particles of 400 mesh size range have been ontained.
