Smart Marterials and Structures in Aerospace Industry

The science and technology of the 21st century will rely heavily on the development of new materials and associated structures. Such materials and structures will have to be innovative with regards to their design and functionality. One such concept in achieving these materials and structures in the impending revolution in what has been termed "Smart Materials and Structures". The most common use of smart materials and structures is in aerospace industry and this advanced technology will bring together all types of sensors, actuators, microprocessors, artificial intelligence, material science and structural engineering to create smart structures. The aim of this paper is to describe application and development of smart materials and structures in aerospace industy and specially aircraft and helicopter airframes.
