STUDY OF THE EFFICACY OF THE USE OF PROPHYLACTIC ANTIBIOTICS IN DECREASING INFECTIOUS COMPLICATIONS AFTER ELECTIVE CESAREAN SURGERY

This study was designed to determine the efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis on decreasing the frequency of infectious complications after elective cesarean section surgery. In this randomized clinical trial, 300 women hospitalized due to elective cesarean section in Bateman Hospital of Yazd in 1993 were divided randomly in two groups: one (100cases) received antibiotics(keflin and Ampicillin) instantly after clumping of umbilical cord and the other(200controls) didnʹt receive any antibiotics. Fever higher than 38 °C after first 24 hours was considered as febrile complication. Patients with premature rupture of membranes, low socioeconomic status and positive history of previous infectious diseases were excluded from our study. Data was analyzed using SPSS software and chi square, Fishers exact and t-student tests. Demographic and surgical characteristics of two groups didnʹt show any significant difference. None of the patients in the two groups showed febrile complications after cesarean section.36% of cases and 59% of controls had fever during the first 24 hours , but none of the cases had fever after that.Results showed that not using antibiotic prophylaxis in elective cesarean section patients without history of previous infectious disease did not result in any increase of post operative febrile complications.
