This short paper uses logistic regression on the responses of 362 Japanese firms located in the member countries of the European Union. The main aim of this paper is to study if there is any statistically significant association between these firmʹs performance, in terms of an improvement in profitability and the kinds of product differentiation that they might have under taken. Four options, quality, price, after sale services and care for environment , were tested. Our results seem to confirm that product differentiation based on quality and after sale services seems to be the most effective means of positively influencing the likelihood of improving firmʹs profitability. In contrast to our expectation, factor associated with environment does not seem to have any significant impact on firmʹs performance. The same is true about price competition which given the market structure within which these firms operate, is to be expected. While further research using better quality date is essential to support specific policy recommendations, it may be safe to suggest that in contrast to general belief, it does not appear to pay off to be environmentally friendly.
