On Editing: Its Problems and the Role of Editors

Editing is the most fundamental stage prior to publication. In spite of a considerable amount of research done on editing, its significance remains to be clarified. This paper aims at introducing readers to the complexities of editing, showing that editing, like all other areas of research, is a specialized field and, therefore, should be treated properly and, finally, shedding light on those aspects of editing that are not quite clear to the new generation of editors. The paper also discusses two types of editing. The first consisting errors which need to be corrected. The second includes points that are related basically to personal taste and editors can just recommend their own choice. Finally, the paper offers a couple of suggestions which may help writers/editors improve the conditions of editing Persian texts.
