Chemical Desulfurization of High Sulfur Coal (Tabas) Using Caustic, Methanol/Water and Methanol/Caustic Solutions

Iran has many coal resources. Physical and chemical properties, especially plastometry property, of many Iranian coals are suitable to be used as coking coal in metallurgy industries. The imperfection of these coals is high content as a pollutant and harmful element. In this research, Tabas high sulfur coal was desulfurized by leaching with caustic, methanol/water and methanol/caustic solutions in a batch reactor. The effect of caustic and methanol concentrations, coal particles, reaction temperature and reaction time on the removal of ash and sulfur was investigated. Depending on the desulfurization conditions, the rate of reduction for total, pyritic and organic sulfur was varied. Plastometry properties, coal recovery percentage and ash removal, measured in this work, were found to be function of the above operating parameters. Also, the rate of desulfurization reaction with caustic solution was found to be well represented by a continuous model that was second order with respect to pyritic sulfur.
