Production of Al - Si Master Alloy by Thermal Reduction of Silica in Molten Cryolite

Possibility of Production Al-Si master alloy by thermal reduction of silica, in molten Cryolite, has been investigated. Kaolin was employed in Cryolite as a primary source of silica which in later steps was reduced to silicon. Effects of reactions time, alumina percent, silica percent, and kaolin amount on silicon reduction coefficient has been studied. The results indicate that silicon reduction increase by increasing reaction time and silica (with solubility limit in molten Cryolite), and in contrast, alumina and unsolved silica reduce silicon reduction coefficient, Kaolin appears to have no effect on silicon reduction coefficient but increasing reactions rate.
