A Critical Approach to Arberry and Shakir s Translation of the Holy Quran

This article aims to find out how much successful Arbery and Shakir have been in their attempt to translate the Quran. As the glorious Quran is a magnificent document and Godʹs message to all human beings which has been kept unaltered for fourteen centuries because of its matchlessness and inimitability, no translation can take its place in Arabic, nor any translation meant to do so. The findings of this investigation indicate that these translations are not free of errors in spite of the fact that Arberyʹs translation enjoys eloquent and charming style of writing and Shakir has more familiarity with Islam. The researcher suggests that a team of specialists in linguistics, translation, theology and Islamic history can better translate the holy Quran into English for the large mass of moslem community all over the world.
