Effect of tuberous-root weight of black zira on generative phase induction, yield and yield components

Black zira Bunium persicum (Boiss.) B. Fedtsch. is a native wild plant in a limited region of west Asia . The seeds are used for medicinal and culinary purposes. Recently the cultivated production of black zira has been increasing in Iran. Research on the cropping system and the agronomic performance of this species may lead to an increase in its production. Experiment was carried out based on a randomized complete block design. Four levels of tuberous-root weights (0.01-0.50 , 0.51-0.10 , 0.10-1.50 , 1.51-2.00 g ) were used as treatment with four replications. Yield and yield components and some vegetative and generative characteristics after transition to flowering were evaluated. It was found that black zira root weight affects on yield and generative phase induction. Small size ( 0.01 - 0.50 g ) tuberous-roots constitute 35.7 % of total in two years from seed and showed a weak performance in terms of emergence and flowering. It could be concluded that in transplanting of black zira the weight of tuberous-roots must be taken into account. Furthermore cultural and breeding programs for achieving a favorable root weight can improve cultivated black zira.
