A Comparative Study of the Chloramphenicol Eye Drop and 5% Povidone Iodine on the Reduction of the Colonization of the Normal Conjunctiva Flora Prior to the Senile Cataract Surgery

This clinical trial was conducted in Shahid Beheshti Hospital in Sabzevar, Iran, to compare the effects of 0.5% Chloramphenicol Eye Drop and 5% Betadine on the Reduction of the Colonization of the Normal Conjunctiva Flora in patients candidate for Cataract Surgery. 79 patients (40 in betadine group and 39 in chloramphenicol group) were randomly selected for the purposes of the study. Conjunctiva secretions of each patient in both groups were taken before and after treatment and sent for laboratory culture. 43% of the patients were men and the rest women; their mean age was 62.5+16; most of them were farmers and housewives. The results of the study indicated only one positive case among the subjects of each group, which is not consistent with the results of previous research in the field. Complementary research on the prevalence of positive normal conjunctiva flora confirmed our findings.
