USE OF PL UERAL BIOPSY NEEDLE IN DIAGNOSIS OF INFLAMMATORY MUSCLE DISEASES

Introduction: Inflammatory myopathies are a compelling problem in the field of rheumatology. Muscle biopsy is the cornerstone of diagnostic approaches. Obective: The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic yield of needle muscle biopsy and open surgical method. Methods: Both procedures were done on 32 patients with suspected inflammatory myopathy referred to Hazrat Rasool Hospital during an 18 month period . Results: The pathologic reports was similar in 27 of the 32 patients in which 4 samples were reported normal by each method .One technical problem occurred during needle biopsy and a vasculitis case was misinterpretated as inflammatory myopathy. None of them was statistically significant. However, results were significantly different in respect to disadvantages of the two methods (P=0.021). Conclusion We recommend needle muscle biopsy sampling as an early diagnostic tool for evaluating patients with suspected inflammatory myopathies .
