Phthalocyanines thin film electrodes have been of particular interest in photoelectrochemical studies because they are stable, highly absorbing, and can be chemically modified to yield a wide range of redox potentials and colors.
Thin film phthalocyanines (100 - 3000 A), including zinc, iron and magnesium phthalocyanine, were prepared by
vacuum deposition method. Chronocoulometry and cyclic voltammetry were used to study the charge transfer reaction mechanism of ionic species through the thin films.
The results in both chronocoulometric and cyclic voltammetric studies showed that the thin film phthalocyanines behave as semiconductor electrodes and the charge transfer occurs at the surface of phthalocyanine electrode. However, the electrochemical experiments , when the thickness is under 100,E showed that some of the ionic species from supporting electrolytes (KNO3, LiCIO4 , KCI, NaCIO4 ) pass through the amorphous phthalocyanine film.
