A Look at Shirkhan Afghanʹs Rebellion During Shah Safiʹs Rule

This research aims at answering the following questions: 1) What were the roots and objectives of Shirkhan Afghanʹs rebellion? 2) Why did it occur? and 3) What were the ultimate results and outcomes of the rebellion? This rebellion which took place in 1040A.H. in the vicinity of Qandhar continued until 1041A.H., corresponding with Shah Safiʹs reign, successor of Shah Abbas I, whose rule from 1038-52 A.H. marks the beginning of the second political phase of the Safavids. During these years the important province of Qandhar was marked with unrest. In this paper, reasons for Shirkhan Afghanʹs rebellion, his moves, the beginning and end of the rebellion, and finally the causes of defeat and its final outcome are investigated and analyzed.
