SURVIVAL ANALYSIS OF COLORECTAL CANCERS YAZD 1981-2000

Colorectal cancers are the most common malignancies of the alimentary tract & the 3rd leading cause of death due to malignancies. Early diagnosis & appropriate treatment certainly provide a longer survival. This study has been done to determine the relation between survival rate of colorectal cancer and age, gender, stage of the disease, differentiation of the tumor & the treatment. This study which was a historical prospective one identified 130 colorectal cancer patients from the records (1981-2000) of the pathology department of Shahid Rahnemoon Hospital. Special questionnaires were filled from the data in the records, and for determining the survival rate, death and its causes and auxiliary treatments it any, information was gathered by visiting the residences of all the patients. Neither age, nor gender influenced the survival of the patients, P value= 0.26. The most common tumors were adenocarcinomas & the least common were squamous cell carcinomas, P value=0. The mean survival for patients with adenocarcinoma was 92.36 months with the longest survival in stage A & the least survival in stage D. P value=0.08. Stage B was the most common initial presenting stage, P value=0.08, with a mean survival of 109.19 months. Pt.s with WDA had the longest survival and pt.s with PDA, the shortest. P value=0.0016. The mode of treatment influenced the survival meaningfully, as the patients who underwent surgery and got chemotherapy had longer survival. P value= O.
