Application of Remote Sensing for Estimation of Snow Hydrological Parameters in Mountainous Area

The application of remote sensing technologies has improved recently for snow cover estimation and other related parameters. Snow accumulation in mountainous areas during cold seasons is one of important resources of energy and snow cover factor in a watershed is also a main variable in snowmelt forecasting modeling. So gathering the information about snow in upland area usually is important. This information can he gather, just by using remote sensing and satellite images. On the oilier hand, preparation of snow information with field observations need to have an extensive station networks, which is very difficult to manage, and is not economical. Snow cover estimation and other related hydrological parameters by using remote sensing require updated satellite images, image processing methods and field control. In this paper, estimation of snow cover and its variations by using remote sensing, capability of different satellite data and applications of snow hydrological parameters in snowmclt runoff forecasting are discussed. With regards to the characteristics of NOAA-AVHHR images according to proper repetition, being cheaper. and more available, these kinds of satellite data is suitable to study of snow hydrology surveys, on the other hand, other satellite data resources such as LANDSAT are more expensive and their repetition of scanning take more than two weeks, so application of these kinds of satellite data is not suitable for snow hydrology surveys in Iran.
