Natural and experimental host ranges of Eggplant mottled dwarf virus (EMDV) were studied during 1998-2000. Plants with symptoms of vein yellowing, stunting and leaf abnormalities from potato, eggplant, tomato, tobacco and cucumber fields were studied for infection with EMDV by ELISA. Test plants were inoculated with leaf extracts of infected plant in phosphate buffer and examined for symptom appearance.
Natural infection of EMDV in Fars was found in potato , eggplant and pepper , in Isfahan in eggplant and potato and in Chahannahal-Bakhtiari province in eggplant, tomato, tobacco, potato, pepper, cucumber and Snakemelon (Cucumis meld var. fexuosus). EMDV had high incidence rate in Isfahan and Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari provinces as compared to Fars province. No EMDV infection was found in eggplant fields of Boushehr province. 1 Jsing antiserum to Isfahan isolate nucleocapsid iii agar gel diffusion , Isfahan and Shahrekord isolates produced a spur with various isolate from Fars. Isfahan isolates of EMDV had more severe symptoms compared to Fars isolate in eggplant. None of the 5 aphid, 13 leafhopper and planthopper and 2 mite species from eggplant fields studied were able to transmit EMDV. This is the first report of occurrence of EMDV infection of pepper, tobacco, cucumber and nightshade in Iran and the first report of EMDV infection of snakemelon in the world.
