COMPARISON OF THE EFFICACY OF THREE METHODS OF CONTROL OF IRON DEFICINCY ANEMIA (IDA) IN CHILDREN AGED 1-5

The important of dietary education in prevention of IDA has been proven in many studies. This attention has been focussed on motherʹs dietary education .This research which was an experimental study was carried out on 160 children aged 1-5 along with their mothers in Kerman cityʹ in order to compare three methods of control of IDA .The subjects were selected by two stage sampling method. The instruments of data gathering were a questionnaire and hematological biochemical laboratory indicators . The samples were divided into 4 groups: group I - Traditional education , group II - supplementation education, group III - PRECEDE education ,and group IV-Control . Intervention was carried out after pretest and after 4 months, the post -test was performed. Results: The mean scores of awareness level , attitude and behaviour of the mothers in groups I & III were higher after intervention (P=0.0000). Comparison of the laboratory findings showed that the highest percentage of improvenent was in group III (82.5%) and improvement in the other groups were : group II (50%) , group I (40.5%) and control group (5%) respectively . In this study we have found that the most effective method for achieving reduction of anemia and correcting the nutritional behaviours is the PRECEDE Educational Model.
