Appropriate strength Properties of ceramics against bullet penetration, are the main reason for their extensive applications in armour manufacturing. Analysis of ceramic armour strength against kinetic energy projectiles has been studied in the recent years. In this respect the Tateʹs theory for long rod penetration has been used for more than 35 years, and recently has been extended for ceramic targets.
Since determination of ceramic target strength (R,J in the Tateʹs equation is very important, different techniques have been used for measuring it and the most important of them is Depth of Penetration (DOP) test. In DOP test, a ceramic tile is decked to the thick backing material and the depth of penetration in backing material is measured.
In this paper attempts has been made to delineate the application of Tateʹs theory in ceramic targets as well as determination of R, and DOP test and ballistic efficiency.
