Hermeneutic approach has been revived in the last decades and its impact on social sciences is evident. In this article, its implications for education is explored. The two important points in hermeneutic views are text and understanding both of which have also central positions in education. Gadamerʹs view is emphasized in this article. According to him, contemporary education has placed emphasis on control which should be replaced by understanding. Education should prepare pupils for understanding others which involves understanding themselves as well. In curriculum development, not only is it necessary to take pupilsʹ activity into accout, but it is also required that the content in curriculum help them understand their particular situation. Understanding has certain implications for the process of education. According to Gadamerʹs central concept of `fusion of horizonsʹ, reading educational texts involves four steps. In the first step, presuppositions of pupils about the texts are important in starting the hermeneutic circle. In the second step, pupils should attempt to find out the writerʹs intended meanings. In the third step, fusion of horizons should occur, as the result of the previous two steps. Finally, in the fourth step, the reader should deal with the relevance of the text to his particular siuation.
