Factors Affecting the Migration of Styrene Monomer from Polystyrene Cups into Food Products

General Purpose Polystyrene (GPPS) is widely used in food-contact packaging materials. The major obstacle concerned with GPPS is the migration of residual-toxic styrene monomer into food products which might affect the consumerʹs health. In this research work the effect of two major parameters, temperature and fat content, were studied on the migration of such monomer from polystyrene cups into different food simulants. Distilled water, 3% acetic acid and 90% ethanol solution were employed as simulants for tea, cold beverages and hot chocolate, respectively. The results indicated that hot water had the lowest amount of migration level, while hot ethanol, representing the hot and fatty beverages, had the highest amount of migration which exceeded the regulatory limit.
